This book intends to examine the relationship between East Asia and Southeast Asia across three themes: historical perspectives, economic flows of capital and people, and socio-cultural connections. While a substantial number of chapters in the book focus on overseas Chinese (living in Indonesia) and their connections with China and Taiwan historically and contemporarily, they also provide in-depth knowledge of international relationship between East Asia and Southeast Asia.Part One, 'Contending Regional Approaches', consists of four chapters that help readers understand the involvement of East Asia from a historical context. The first chapter on Taiwan before 1975 is followed by a chapter on Taiwan's strategy toward Southeast Asia after the 1980s. The remaining two chapters focus on China-Southeast Asia and Japan-Southeast Asia relations.Part Two, 'Economic Flows of Capital & People', consists of six chapters that mainly examine the flow of capital and people between Indonesia and Taiwan from the colonial period to the present and how this flow changed both societies.Part Three, 'Socio-Cultural Connections', consists of three chapters. This part is a unique contribution to the scholarship that focuses on the transformation of both traditional and popular culture among Southeast Asia, China, and Taiwan by focusing on different agents.Contents:About the EditorsIntroductionContending Regional Approaches:The Diplomatic Efforts of the Republic of China Toward Southeast Asia, 1950–1978 (Jason LIM)Unpacking Taiwan's Presence in Southeast Asia: The International Socialization of the New Southbound Policy (Alan Hao YANG)China's Financial Statecraft in Southeast Asia: Aid Fungibility and the Authoritarian Donor's Dilemma (Chia-Chien CHANG)Historical Change of the International Trade of Southeast Asia and Its Relations with Japan (Hiroyoshi KANO)Economic Flows of Capital & People:The Role of Hakka Merchants in Asia Focusing on the Family Network between Kobe, Batavia, Hongkong and Meixian in Early 20th Century (Laixing CHEN)Proving 'Japaneseness': Passport and Identification Problems of Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (Makoto YOSHIDA)Entangled Mobility: Hui Migration, Religious Identity and Cultural Capital in Malaysia (HEW Wai Weng)Taiwan Investment in Southeast Asia: The Choice of Taishang and Their Response in the Changing Asia (Kristy HSU)Marrying out of Indonesia and Global Householding: Chinese Indonesian Women from West Kalimantan across Taiwan and Transnational Chinese Community (Sachiko YOKOTA)Indonesia–Taiwan Relationship under the New Southbound Policy: A Perspective from Jakarta (Rita Pawestri SETYANINGSIH)Taiwan's NGOs and Southeast Asia (Kevin CHEN)Socio-Cultural Connections:The Socio-Cultural Connections: The Chinese Indonesian Popular Magazines on Taiwan and China in 1945–1955 (Yerry WIRAWAN)Wayang Potehi: Cultural Connection between Taiwan and Indonesia (Kaori FUSHIKI)Screen Connections between Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China (Thomas BARKER)IndexReadership: Academics, undergraduate, and graduate students, professionals, and policymakers interested in Asian studies, Asian politics, East Asia and Southeast Asia interactions, political economy.
